1st Quarter Art Elements & Principles This quarter will be spent acquainting the students with the Principles of Art, and Art Elements. We will use graphic organizers such as analysis grids & Venn diagrams as aids for dissecting works of art to analyze the functions of line, form, color, texture, value, and space. Students will complete works of art exhibiting their understanding of Art Elements & Principles. Additionally, we examine the nature of creativity and explore techniques to identify individual preferences and incorporate skills and techniques, both traditional and invented. Students will complete Juxtaposition Challenges to heighten and expand creativity. Rubrics, critiques and peer feedback will serve as a forum in which students will be asked to consider parameters for quality and composition. Lastly, students will be expected to do work outside of class. They will be given a creativity journal which I have named, Wreck-less Abandon, in which they will keep poetry, try unusual media, note mark-making ideas, as well as fun, artistic tasks. This journal serves as a guided sketchbook for the non-artist and simple fun for the innately artsy.
2nd Quarter Art Advocacy And Design As students become comfortable with their growing skills and understandings, we will investigate art careers, examine theories of art, and collectively discover the way in which the brain responds to the creative process via Studio Habits of Mind. Students will be exposed to color theory via colourlovers.com where they will upload visual inspirations to create palettes for textile design. Finally we will learn that art making fosters such beneficial habits as healthy risk taking, the science-related mindset of learning from mistakes, as well as organization and intrinsic direction while making art to promote such.
3rd Quarter Individual Research: Art Movements Students will select, research, and create an original presentation on an art movement that interests them. The knowledge of events within the time period of their movement, the ability to describe the characteristics of works in their selected art movement, and understanding of the impact the movement has made on the world, along with a painting in the same style, will be the major focus for this quarter.
4th Quarter Art Series:Three Works, One Focus Each student has had sufficient time in the year to discover and explore interests, themes, foci, styles, and art movements. All students have a body of work from which to pull ideas and identify patterns. Final Quarter is the perfect time to learn about working on a series and formulating an Artist Statement.
